The Escape pace car was unveiled at the Louisville Assembly Plant by two-time Daytona 500 champ and Ford NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth, who was on hand to drive the vehicle for the first time as part of a media program outside the plant where the new vehicle is built.

The new Escape will pace all three events — Thursday’s (June 28) NASCAR Camping World Truck series UNOH 225 event, Friday’s (June 29) NASCAR Nationwide series Feed the Children 300 race and Saturday’s (June 30) NASCAR Sprint Cup series Quaker State 400 race in prime time.

“I am glad I got to be part of this ceremony today,” said Kenseth. “Not only did I get a chance to drive the all-new Escape for the first time, but I had a chance to tour the new plant and meet some of the workers who built the vehicle, which was really neat.”

“They are proud of the new Escape, as they should be. It’s a really sharp vehicle that will look great leading the field at Kentucky.”

The Escape pace vehicle recently rolled off the assembly line at the newly-transformed Louisville Assembly Plant. It’s just a short, one-hour trek to Kentucky Speedway where one of America’s best-selling vehicles will lead the field to the green flag in NASCAR.

“We’re delighted to highlight another exciting new vehicle to the huge and passionate NASCAR fan base,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “The all-new Escape is the perfect match for Kentucky Speedway because it is built in Louisville.

“The new Escape offers a blend of exciting styling and the performance attributes to handle the pace car duties that weekend,” said Allison. “And we are sure there will be a lot of proud Ford workers in the grandstands who helped build the pace vehicle.”

Ford and its Cincinnati Region Area Ford Dealers are one of the original sponsor partners of the Kentucky Speedway, a relationship that began during the construction of the track in 1999. Ford has been the only “official automotive vehicle” partner of Kentucky Speedway since the first race at the track in 2000.

This marks the latest in a line of exciting pace car debuts for Ford. In addition to being the first manufacturer to use an all-electric pace vehicle with the 2012 Focus Electric which paced April’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Richmond, Ford was also the first to use a hybrid to start a NASCAR event when the Fusion Hybrid served as pace car for the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2008.

Ford also was the first manufacturer to unveil its 2013 race car model, when it showed off the ’13 Fusion to media in January of this year.

The Ritvo honors the best in design in the automotive world, whether it’s a concept car, production vehicle, a marketing campaign or a particular element of a vehicle that defines elegance in design.

“It is an honor to accept this award on behalf of the team behind the all-new Ford Fusion,” said Chris Hamilton, Fusion chief designer. “The 2013 Fusion has a revolutionary design that puts an accent on elegance: It has a sophisticated feel and a sleek profile setting it apart from traditional midsize sedans.”

“When reviewing all the entries for the Design and Elegance Award,” said Meghan Melvin of the MFA, “we appreciated the simplicity of line of the Fusion’s detailing, the subtle shaping of the hood and the distinctive front composition of the vehicle.”

The design of the all-new Fusion, on sale later this year, was built upon five key elements:

Silhouette innovation: Fusion’s sleek profile sets it apart from the “three-box” powertrain/cabin/trunk designs synonymous with midsize sedans

Perceived efficiency: Fusion character lines sweeping to the rear and thin roof pillars suggest the car is nimble and light on its feet

Refined surface language: Fusion demonstrates that a tasteful, well-executed design does not require add-ons or visual clutter

Technical graphics: Fusion’s functional design elements such as headlamps, LED taillamps and polished exhaust tips communicate enhanced technological capability

New face: Fusion signals the next evolution in Ford global design language for midsize cars and smaller

Hamilton is accepting the award tonight.

“Gene would have been pleased to see a car like the Ford Fusion win this award,” said Keith Griffin, NEMPA president. “It’s an elegant vehicle that is a true head turner. At the same time, it’s practical transportation. I was happy to see the Museum of Fine Arts and Larz Anderson – who partnered with NEMPA for the first time this year in judging the entries – select this as the winner.”

The award is named for the late Gene Ritvo, a devoted NEMPA member and veteran concours photographer who had an unusually keen eye. The first Ritvo Award was presented in May 2011 to Infiniti for its marketing campaign that focused on design and elegance.

The 2013 Ford Fusion debuted at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in January.

“Our engine plant in Cleveland is the first and only facility in North America to produce EcoBoost engines, and we are tripling production capacity to meet customers’ growing needs for fuel-efficient engines,” said Mark Fields, president of The Americas, at an employee celebration at the plant today.” EcoBoost engines are a key part of our plan to give customers the power of choice – from EcoBoost-powered vehicles and hybrids to plug-in hybrids and full electrics.”

Introduced in 2009 on the Ford Taurus SHO and Lincoln MKS, EcoBoost technology combines direct injection and turbocharging.

This solution has been popular with customers, who have purchased 180,000 Cleveland-built 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engines since 2009. In 2011, Ford sold a record 121,000 vehicles equipped with 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engines when F-150 began offering an EcoBoost option.

In first-quarter 2012 alone, Ford sold more than 39,000 vehicles equipped with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, representing more than a 285 percent increase from the first quarter of 2011.

Cleveland Engine’s 3.7-liter V6 serves as the base engine for two iconic Ford vehicles – Mustang and F-150 – and is a favorite among customers.

The F-150 3.7-liter V6 outsells all other competitive V6 full-size trucks and carries an EPA fuel economy rating of 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The Ford Mustang equipped with the 3.7-liter V6 and available six-speed transmission broke new ground as the most fuel-efficient Mustang ever with 31 mpg highway and 19 mpg city.

The 250 jobs being added in Cleveland for running the third shift primarily will be filled by employees transferring from Cleveland Engine Plant No. 2, which is scheduled to end production later this week.

Later this month, Ford will add one shift of F-150 production at its Kansas City Assembly Plant, allowing the company to better meet increasing demand for America’s best-selling vehicle.

LOS ANGELES, May 3, 2012 – Global automakers from the United States and Germany will demonstrate fast-charging technology that will enable the recharging of most electrified vehicles with compatible systems in as little as 15-20 minutes.

Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen have agreed to support a harmonized single-port fast charging approach – called DC-fast charging with a Combined Charging System – for use on electric vehicles in Europe and the United States.

Live charging demonstrations will be conducted during the Electric Vehicle Symposium 26 (EVS26) May 6-9.

The combined charging system integrates one-phase AC-charging, fast three-phase AC-charging, DC-charging at home and ultra-fast DC-charging at public stations into one vehicle inlet. This will allow customers to charge at most existing charging stations regardless of power source and may speed more affordable adoption of a standardized infrastructure.

The International Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has chosen the Combined Charging System as the fast-charging methodology for a standard that incrementally extends the existing Type 1-based AC-charging. The standard is to be officially published this summer. ACEA, the European association of vehicle manufacturers has also selected the Combined Charging System as its AC/DC-charging interface for all new vehicle types in Europe beginning in 2017.

The charging system design was based on the collaborative review and analysis of existing charging strategies, the ergonomics of the connector and preferences of U.S. and European customers. The Combined Charging System was developed for all international vehicle markets and creates a uniform standard with identical electrical systems, charge controllers, package dimensions and safety mechanisms.

The system maximizes capability for integration with future smart grid developments through common broadband communication methods regardless of the global location of the charging system. The combined charging approach will reduce development and infrastructure complexity, improve charging reliability, reduce the total cost-of-ownership for end customers and provide low maintenance costs.

Commercially available combined charging stations are projected to be available later this year. All committed OEMs have vehicles in development which will use the Combined Charging System.

The all-new Focus Electric will perform all pace care duties at Richmond International Raceway on April 28.

“Ford research shows the majority of Americans would consider buying an electrified vehicle but do not yet understand the different technologies,” said Mark Fields, president of The Americas. “Highlighting the Focus Electric as a pace car is a fun way to educate consumers about the kinds of benefits our electrified vehicles deliver and show people our commitment to provide Ford customers the power of choice for leading fuel economy in the vehicle that best meets their needs – from EcoBoost®-powered gasoline vehicles and hybrids to plug-in hybrids and full electrics.”

Approximately 35 percent of new car intenders are motorsports fans and 78 percent of them support NASCAR, according to Ford research. Additionally, Ford race fans are 67 percent more likely to consider Ford products than general market consumers.

This marks the latest in a line of groundbreaking moments for Ford in NASCAR. In addition to being the first manufacturer to compete with a four-door sedan as its flagship model in 1998, Ford was also first to use a hybrid to start a NASCAR event when the Fusion Hybrid served as pace car for the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2008.

In January, Ford became the first manufacturer to show off its 2013 NASCAR race car when it unveiled the new 2013 Fusion racer to media in Charlotte, N.C.

The Focus Electric pace car will be unveiled for the public at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond on April 25. Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling will deliver the Focus Electric to Richmond International Raceway, where it will serve as pace car for that weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event.

“Our fans are customers,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “And just like in racing, they expect both fuel economy and performance from their daily drivers, and that’s what Ford is delivering.”

“This a time of year when many teens request, and parents provide, expanded driving privileges,” said Jim Graham, manager, Ford Driving Skills for Life. “Unfortunately, safety can take a back seat to the excitement associated with the many celebrations around prom and graduation.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic crashes are the leading cause of death among ages 15 to 20. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) reported a slight upward trend in teen traffic fatalities during the first six months of 2011, which is the most recent data available.

Teen drivers, mile to mile, are in three times as many fatal crashes as other drivers, claiming the lives of nearly 3,000 teens each year. The under-20 age group also has the highest proportion of distracted drivers involved in fatal crashes.

During April, Ford Driving Skills for Life will provide more than 1,000 teens with advanced safe-driving skills from some of the nation’s top professional driving instructors in free, hands-on driving modules. Ford DSFL is visiting high schools in Spokane and Washington’s Tri-Cities with a full day of multifaceted activities to build skills in four key areas: driver distraction, speed/space management, vehicle handling and hazard recognition.

Ford DSFL also is teaming up with state officials in Illinois to award high school teams that have created winning safety education campaigns the opportunity to learn new skills from professional drivers on a specially equipped course that lets them experience the worst the road has to offer, within a controlled and safe environment.

“Driving is a privilege, not a right, and parents need to set certain limits to ensure their teens stay safe,” added Barbara Harsha, GHSA executive director. “We recommend that parents talk with their teen drivers and together establish rules, including limits for the number of passengers, nighttime driving limits and a commitment not to text and drive. Every state has graduated license requirements and it is critical, especially during this season, that teens and parents are aware of and committed to follow these provisions.”

Also this month, Ford DSFL will award $100,000 in grants to GHSA members to conduct teen driving initiatives incorporating the award-winning Ford DSFLprogram. Highway safety agencies in Minnesota, New York, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin each will receive $20,000.

•Minnesota – The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety will conduct four, half-day skills events at the Minnesota Highway Safety & Research Center, using professional instructors and some of the Ford DSFLdriving exercises. A session for parents will help them become more involved with their teens’ driving education.
•New York – The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee will incentivize high schools, community organizations, police agencies and other safety partners to conduct teen safe driving campaigns related to restraint use. Tools such as teen-focused prizes and web-based curricula also will help spread awareness of issues surrounding teen driving.
•Utah – The Utah Department of Public Safety Highway Safety Office will create electronic materials and videos for the Highway Patrol’s Teen Driving Challenge, for teens to share with their friends and family. The funding also will help to create a tool kit for teen outreach and to enhance driver education instructors’ teaching skills.
• Virginia – The Virginia State Highway Safety Office, in partnership with Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety and the Virginia Beach Police Department, will offer a Safe Driving Day for up to 500 students at Virginia Beach schools. The event will include courses on distracted and impaired driving, seat belt convincer and simulators.
•Wisconsin – The Wisconsin DOT Bureau of Traffic Safety will partner with Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin to create a teen safe driving event that includes the PEERS driving simulator, to demonstrate the dangers of distracted driving. The program will utilize Ford DSFL web resources and curriculum.

Developed with the Governors Highway Safety Association, Ford Driving Skills for Life is recognized as the nation’s most comprehensive driving skills program, with free professional driver instruction, state grants, free materials for parents and educators and a Web-based curriculum that includes “The Academy” on www.drivingskillsforlife.com. Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) has trained more than 500,000 new drivers through free online and professional hands-on driver instruction.
